Calgary Flames re-sign Ben Jones and Emilio Pettersen to one-year, $775,000 contracts

The Calgary Flames re-signed restricted free agents Ben Jones and Mathias Pettersen to two-way contracts after strong seasons with the AHL's Calgary Wranglers. With no remaining RFAs on their roster, the Flames aim to navigate the offseason strategically amid salary cap constraints.
Both players were restricted free agents this offseason, with Pettersen coming off of his entry-level contract, while Jones had concluded a one-year, $775,000 contract that had arbitration rights, although he didn’t file for arbitration ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. Both contracts are two-way deals, although there’s currently no confirmation as to what their minor league salaries will be.
Jones, 24, had a strong season in the AHL with the Calgary Wranglers, with 17 goals, 37 assists, and 54 points in 71 regular season games, with his assist and point totals besting his previous career-highs. He also had a goal, an assist, and two points in nine playoff games as the Wranglers lost in five games in the Pacific Division Finals to the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
Jones was a seventh round pick of the Vegas Golden Knights in their inaugural draft in 2017, where he spent three seasons in their organization, and even played two games with the Golden Knights in 2021-22. He joined the Flames organization in the 2022 offseason after the Golden Knights elected not to give him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Pettersen, 23, also had a great season with the Wranglers, with 19 goals, 25 assists, and 44 points in 61 regular season games, all being career-highs for him. He only got into five games with the Wranglers in the playoffs, with just one assist in that time.
Pettersen was a sixth round pick of the Flames in 2018 out of the USHL. He spent two seasons with the University of Denver before signing his entry-level contract, and has since spent the past three seasons in the AHL with the Stockton Heat/Wranglers.
With Jones and Pettersen signed, the Flames now have no RFAs remaining on their roster. It’s been a quiet offseason for them other than sending Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils for Yegor Sharangovich and a third round pick, with their only signings outside of their organization being Brady Lyle and Jordan Oesterle. They haven’t had a lot of cap space to work with now that the extensions to Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar have kicked in, but they do have exactly $2.4 million right now, so there is some room to make some additions.
